  1. This is a collection of arguments against an executive forgiveness move. It leaves out quite a bit, such as: A federal policy of inflating college costs while profiting massively from it (~$1.6 bil/yr) Subsidizing expansion of college bureaucracy via direct federal spending @jimgeraghty/1519309272429047809

A federal policy of allowing people with no assets and no income to take on liabilities that (uniquely) cannot be discharged for any reason. A failure of many states to provide quality public post-secondary education Failure to leverage government funding to control costs

A more obvious way forward: Promulgate a policy of not profiting from student loans No federal dollars for colleges over a maximum tuition Illegalize loan packages involving payments for more than 20% of local median income Allow bankruptcy discharge of student loans again

Jim’s piece is replete with bromides about mortgages and responsibility, assuming a free and open market in colleges. Instead, it’s a federally created and mandated Potemkin market for loans that only exist due to inflationary government intervention. And now they must fix it.
