    @JohnJHarwood Maybe I’m reading between Trump’s rambling too much, but I take him to mean that no prior vetting process would approve Kavanaugh, and his people knowingly dove into the mess of his checkered background and lack of basic judicial ethics, because it suited their base to fight.

      @JohnJHarwood To be clear, Kavanaugh’s failing was ultimately outing himself as a dime-store political hack (and the 2nd of the Bush v Gore lawyer trio on the court). The court has survived many drunkards and sex pests. It will struggle to survive open partisan warfare.
