      1. After reading this, I think it’s time for a rant about New York’s cruel and sick excuse for juvenile justice. TL;DR: the black/ town kids the state jails get a sad alternative to civil rights before getting badly mistreated by an indifferent bureaucracy. theappeal.org/caging-kids-is-an-american-tradition/#.XT-0tRxNvnH.twitter

In a state where only black and brown families are highly policed both as to their behavior at home and how they raise their kids, you won’t be surprised to find their children in the same racist bind:

With juvenile facilities with a long history of human rights abuses and levels of violence that would make a Rikers warden blush, steps have been taken to close down the worst facilities. And export the abuses outside of public view to smaller jails. urbandemos.nyu.edu/2018/05/23/the-story-of-the-bronxs-spofford-juvenile-detention-center/

Legislators and advocates are making valiant attempt to avoid the worst abuses and make this system work, but are stuck with bad-faith stakeholders in the violent/abusive system we’ve had, from DA’s to corrections staff. citylimits.org/2018/10/01/the-kids-are-leaving-rikers-is-it-really-a-new-day-for-juvenile-justice-in-nyc/

Shuffling kids from one jail to another has, predictably, done little for their prospects of reoffending or being subjected to an official culture of drug use, violence, and psychological abuse. These kids are trapped in a system that few other Western countries tolerate.

It’s worth noting that studies have shown that incarcerating children serves no useful punitive or deterrent purpose, and instead incurs trauma that society pays for later. nber.org/papers/w19102

I also don’t want to diminish the great work @RaiseTheAgeNY did here. It really moved the envelope on this vile and ineffective system. But as they pointed out, moving kids from Riker’s to DOC custody is not remotely sufficient to meet the goals of reform. raisetheageny.com/2018/letter-to-mayor
